Smallsats- Will They Generate Large Returns?
Smallsats launched to the industry forefront in 2013 and have continued to grasp headlines and attract new interest ever since. Millions in VC investment, acquisitions, and backdoor listings have come alongside. Players along the value chain from manufacturing to launch to operations have won interest and early investment, but many are delayed and all have yet to generate a significant return from operations. As the youngest market of the satellite industry, smallsats have far to go to in proving their value to investors and customers alike. Can emerging players pull CAPEX, OPEX, and target markets into a profitable business plan? Which funding models are most appropriate to spur success? This session will address the ins and outs of small sat business models, ultimately exploring whether such ventures can generate large returns or will be constrained to revenues that reflect the size of the satellites themselves.
